Janssen Pharmaceutical R&D seeks an innovative scientific leader with expertise in creatively applying quantitative analysis to pharmaceutical and/or biomedical research. He/she will lead the Computational & Systems Biology Group which is a new, dynamic program that brings together a team of researchers with expertise in mathematics, computer/computational science, physical/natural sciences, and engineering to apply their expertise to areas of biomedical and pharmaceutical research in close collaboration with the other research programs within Janssen. Areas of current focus include computational/systems biology, systems pharmacology, genomic analysis, population genetics, neuroscience, immunology, oncology, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, infectious diseases, and signal and image processing. Integration and analysis of information across modalities and space/time scales, spanning genomes, cells, circuits and behavior remains an extremely challenging problem, which we expect these researchers to address. We seek a senior scientist with strong training and experience in applied quantitative methods and a track record of scholarship to take the leadership role. Candidates should possess outstanding communication skills as well as broad biological interests that will enable them to facilitate interactions between laboratory-based researchers throughout Janssen and quantitative scientists within the CSB group. Previous experience in research within a pharmaceutical environment is a plus. The Head, CSB, will help shape the long term vision and strategy of the group and manage the delivery of scientific analyses and systems in support of R&D business groups. He/She will support therapy areas and other stakeholders from a integrative, systems-level perspective by developing and leading a successful program in scientific applications research (quality of science, staffing, and budget oversight) and advance the scientific mission of the business groups. This person will plan and execute training programs for scientists and engineers throughout Janssen and enhance the ability of researchers to exploit Informatics in their work. He/she will perform research relevant to the mission of the organization and publish high quality research. This individual will lead computational analysis efforts of high-dimensional datasets from experimental medicine (non-interventional trials) and clinical trials implementing methods and supporting tools for analyzing high-dimensional datasets identifying novel targets, biomarkers, mechanisms of resistance, and effective therapeutic combinations through the translation of bioinformatics data. This includes development of new research directions in the application of Informatics in support of the evolving needs of the R&D business groups. The successful candidate will take responsibility for personnel management, including but not limited to performance appraisals and staff development plans. This person will provide effective and meaningful performance feedback to individual staff members. He/she will help select and retain highly qualified staff, develop capabilities of staff, and ensure that staff is competent, trained, and qualified for assigned work and ensure that staff are effectively utilized, rewarded, and motivated. The Head, CSB, will effectively communicate data and results to stakeholders on project teams and work effectively with IT and informatics colleagues in across pharma sectors. He/she will build and mentor teams in a matrix environment.

Qualifications


A M.D. and/or Ph.D. in computational sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences, medicine or engineering is required. A minimum of 5 years post-graduate experience in the field of bioinformatics, computational/systems biology, drug discovery, computational/statistical genetics or systems pharmacology is required. Candidates with industry experience preferred. Extensive experience analyzing high-dimensional datasets for disease understanding and biomarker discovery is required. Strong management skills and demonstrated ability to lead a group of scientists to deliver on objectives in defined timelines is required. Experience with drug discovery and development practices and project support in a large pharmaceutical setting is a plus. Independent, self-motivated and innovative and the ability to excel in a goal-oriented, multifaceted and fast-moving team environment is required. Outstanding communication, organizational and leadership skills, with a successful track record of collaborating with cross-functional scientific teams is required. The role will require up to 25% domestic/international travel. The role will be based in Spring House, PA.
