Position Summary:
The Bioinformatician will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team of bioinformaticians and computational biologists working to identify novel opportunities for improvement of intrinsic yield in crops, principally by enhancing photosynthetic efficiency and carbon fixation. This inidividual must work both independently and in a highly collaborative manner with scientists and specialists from across the Benson Hill R&D organization to conduct hypothesis-generating analyses which inform and guide research decisions.
Benson Hill employs a holistic rather than a reductionist approach to drive its synthetic biology-based strategy for improving intrinsic yield. The Bioinformatician will be a key member of the bioinformatics and computational biology group and will employ computational biology (mathematical modeling and simulation) and bioinformatics (analyzing large, complex datasets) using an integrated plant systems biology approach.
Key Responsibilities:
- Integrate public domain and Benson Hill proprietary knowledge relevant to photosynthesis, including genome sequences, annotations, and related genome-scale datasets such as microarray and RNA-seq expression profiling data.
- Generate, analyze, and compare gene regulatory and metabolic network models in order to nominate, engineer/design target genes and both native and synthetic regulatory sequences for in planta testing.
- Establish systems for integrating genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, phenomic, and environmental datasets in order understand and predict photosynthetic performance in plants.
- Develop genome assemblies, genome annotations, gene regulatory and metabolic network models, analysis pipelines, comparative genomics resources, and applications to support data analysis, visualization, and synthetic gene and regulatory sequence engineering.
- Develop and deploy advanced analytics algorithms and techniques in order to generate and deliver specific new knowledge and testable hypotheses.
- Maintain detailed and organized records of project data and other materials as needed.
- Participate in the R&D project planning process and contribute to scientific discussions and present outcomes to colleagues and Benson Hill leadership.
Education, Experience, and other position parameters:
- Degree preference of M.S. or Ph.D. in computer science or a related field; exceptional candidates with B.S. and relevant experience will be considered.
- Minimum two years of experience in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, or a related field.
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, experience, education, and capabilities:
- Ambitious and highly motivated with a strong background in computer science, bioinformatics, genomics, statistical and analytical techniques, and preferably plant science.
- Direct experience with genome analysis, annotation, large-scale data analytics, visualizations of complex data, modeling, and comparative genomic analyses.
- Experience managing and analyzing high-throughput sequencing derived genomic and transcriptomic sequence data sets.
- Proven bioinformatics, genomic, analytical, computing, and programming skills. Analytical skills should include statistical computing in R, MatLab or related; computing skills should include expertise with Unix/Linux environments and computational clusters, and programming skills should include Perl, C/C++, Java, Python, PHP or similar languages that are widely used in biocomputing.
- A sound understanding of and experience with relational database schemas and SQL queries, and an ability to envision web-service application solutions.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work with in a multi-disciplinary setting.
- Ability to multi-task and take on new assignments as necessary in a fast-moving startup atmosphere.
- Ability to work autonomously or collaboratively as part of a team.
- Excellent planner, organizer, critical thinker, and problem solver, with a demonstrated ability to efficiently execute project tasks.
- Previous experience with photosynthetic modeling is a plus.
- Industrial experience and familiarity with plant sciences and biotechnology is preferred.
