We are looking for a bioinformatician who has extensive knowledge of bioinformatics algorithms, databases and analyses with a focus on next-generation sequencing. This individual will support the automated tracking and analysis for the core sequencing facility as well as interact with faculty, post-docs and students to help them arrive at the best analysis procedure for their data. A strong focus will be placed on automation of processes in order to speed up common tasks and optimize staff time. The individual will be expected to communicate their knowledge to the students and faculty through workshops, demonstrations and on-line tools. The position reports directly to the Director of Informatics and Scientific Applications. The group lies at the intersection of scientific research and large scale computational analysis and works with many research groups. We are thus looking for someone who has a keen ability for picking up new knowledge and enjoys working on a wide variety of projects. These range from core analysis pipelines tailored for high throughput analysis of RNA-seq and whole genome sequence data and more specific projects. Although we are a core group we are involved in a number of grants with faculty groups both in basic biological research and large scale data analysis. The successful applicant would be encouraged to participate both in the writing and execution of grant proposals with faculty members.
A Masters in Biology/Computer Science or other scientific field and at least five years bioinformatics experience. Experience with both high-level programming languages such as perl/python and lower level ones such as C/C++. Experience with scientific computing algorithms and statistical techniques.
A PhD is strongly preferred along with experience with large, computationally intensive problems. Expertise with combining a number of algorithms in pipelines with source control management, testing and monitoring. Knowledge of next generation sequence technology and analysis and with the python, perl, java and c programming languages. Experience with Linux and job scheduling software.Experience with Matlab, R and data visualization techniques.Experience managing data at scale through relational databases. Must have the ability to work well with others.
